		<description>
House Hayward Now
House Hayward Now (HHN) is a resident-led group formed to address the housing and homelessness crisis in Hayward. HHN is completely resident/volunteer-run and takes ZERO funding from corporate real-estate interests. HHN approaches this work from three angles:
Policy: HHN researches regional and national housing solutions, translating them into policies that can be put into practice specifically for Hayward.

Advocacy: HHN engages in community outreach to inform our policy research and provide housing education to local decision-makers and organizations involved in housing and homelessness work.&#38;nbsp;

Organizing: HHN actively canvasses tenants across the city to understand their needs, educate them about their rights and resources, and encourage them to organize with their neighbors.
In 2023, HHN successfully advocated for the City of Hayward to allocate $500,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding towards free legal aid for residents facing evictions after the COVID moratorium expried, preventing a wave of unjust evictions and homelessness.In 2024, the City’s Housing and Homelessness Task Force was nearly placed on hiatus, but HHN organized alongside local service providers for Hayward to convert the Task Force into the City’s permanent Housing Policy and Research Committee, ensuring that housing remains a focus for our City for years to come.

HHN also introduced a Rental Registry System (RRS) to the city,&#38;nbsp;which will provide our city with the necessary data to track and enforce fair rent increases, prevent illegal evictions, and gain better insight into housing and homelessness trends in our city. We succeeded in moving the RRS past the city’s Housing and Homelessness Task Force, and City Council incorporated its development into their strategic roadmap.&#38;nbsp;
In September 2025,&#38;nbsp; the full City Council held a worksession on a Rental Registry Ordinance. Residents from across the city spoke out in unanimous support and a majority of the Council were favorable the program, however direction was given to revisit the program in a year due to staffing shortages while the city’s addresses its severe budget deficit.We are currently developing a student homelessness intervention plan (SHIP) in partnership with staff from Hayward Promise Neighborhood, Hayward Unified School District, South Hayward Parish, and La Familia.
HHN has joined the Hayward Community Coalition in an effort to coordinate tenant organizing in Hayward.

		<description>Hayward Lit Hop
 The Hayward Lit Hop is a literary festival in Downtown Hayward. The event takes place on the&#38;nbsp;last Saturday of April each year (on Independent Bookstore Day in National Poetry Month), and&#38;nbsp;was conceived and organized by a group of literary-minded volunteer community members and is free for all ages.

The Lit Hop begins with local music and a kickoff ceremony in Heritage Plaza with remarks from city officials and librarians and readings from our poet laureates.&#38;nbsp;&#60;img width="2048" height="924" width_o="2048" height_o="924" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4b5f7578484de9d8d78c9cf6e4360c1f97260c6c3fd8941fed267a61a124acde/lit-hop-2.jpg" data-mid="225921652" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4b5f7578484de9d8d78c9cf6e4360c1f97260c6c3fd8941fed267a61a124acde/lit-hop-2.jpg" /&#62;Lit Hop kickoff at Hayward Heritage Plaza, across from the Hayward Public Library
Then we disperse out to a variety of smaller hour-long readings from various local writing groups up and down B and C streets before re-congregating for an afterparty with food, drinks, and music.
The Hayward Lit Hop is also branching out to co-promote and host readings as part of other events elsewhere in Hayward. See you around town!

Shots from the September 2025 Hayward Night Market
The Hayward Night Market is hosted at St. Rose Hospital and features food trucks, music, local crafts, and entertainment. Some things to look forward to at the Hayward Night Market are:

Over 50+ community groups, local artists, and business owners
Performances by local dancers, DJs, and musicians

Children's activities including bubble wands, face painting, chalking, crafts table
Giveaways and event merchandiseThe first Hayward Night Market was funded by the Hayward Peoples Budget — made possible through the&#38;nbsp;Hayward Community Coalitions’s campaign to put public funds directly in the hands of the people to invest in the parts of our city that have been historically neglected.&#38;nbsp;

 “As I grew up, spaces for the community seemed to shrink. The baseball fields that once were community hubs on the weekends were removed, and the weekend commotion at the local parks slowly disappeared. We hope that the
Hayward Night Market becomes a recurring event that folks from all over the city consider a neighborhood staple.” - Alex Moreno

The Hayward Herald is a non-profit, independent, hyper-local news outlet focused on the City of Hayward. We exist to fill a gap left by the collapse of local news media by providing an independent, Hayward-centric, voice for our community in a time when most people know more about what's going on in other countries than their own City. We want to educate Hayward residents about local news, events, and politics which will strengthen civic and community engagement.&#38;nbsp;You can subscribe and support us online at haywardherald.substack.com and @haywardherald on Instagram and Facebook.

Beyond our twice-weekly news offering, we've also created:

Over The Loudspeaker: a Hayward-focused news show where we discuss local issues and elevate the voices of your community.&#38;nbsp;

Hayward Voices: a speaker series where we bring together experts and change-makers to engage the community in discussion around the most pressing issues in our city.&#38;nbsp;

Hayward Herald Zine: a print publication that brings local news and art together in a 100% Hayward-made package.
We hope to create a media landscape that supports Hayward in a sustainable, community-driven way that prioritizes our people over short-term profits.

During Fall ‘23, over 1400 residents were surveyed to assess interest in creating a South Hayward Market. We received nearly unanimous support.
